Phase 4

After completing ENG 2100 this semester, I’ve learned many valuable writing skills. Not only did I learn more about structuring different kinds of essays, I was also able to implement my own ideas and experiences in my works. Through the first major assignment, the language and literacy narrative, I was able to freely share and reflect on my own language experiences and connect them to a larger social significance, that being the impact of decisions. In the rhetorical analysis essay, I analysed how Amy Tan’s “Mother Tongue” used rhetorical strategies to appeal to the audience and gave my own interpretation of her work. One new skill I learned from this essay was structuring the academic summary. I learned about the different pieces of information I had to add that talk about the author and the text as well as the author’s argument which helped set up the different analysis paragraphs. Moreover, in the research-based argument essay, I learned even more skills. Structure wise, this essay was quite similar to the rhetorical analysis essay since I had to give an academic summary for the sources before fully analysing them and relating them to the thesis. One skill that I learned was structuring and writing a synthesis. I also got to learn about how to use the database that the Baruch library offers and use it to find key sources for this essay and future others. During class I also learned things and practiced certain skills. The time we spent on class mainly helped me organize my thoughts and how I was going to write my essays since the notes we were able to take gave us a clear outline and structure that was expected. We were also taught crucial vocabulary during class and the group activities helped us enforce that vocabulary and skills that we could use to write our essays. Also, the virtual conferences that were held helped me a lot in keeping me on the right track. The feedback that I got on my drafts were very beneficial in solidifying my understanding of the topics, structure of the essay, and organizing my ideas. Overall, through the essays and lectures, I learned many valuable writing skills during this course that I know will help me tremendously in the future, not only for other college courses, but also for things I may have to write in my lifetime.
